WONDERING WHAT AIXP IS?
AIXP is an IXP for Arusha City, it is a Tanzania Internet Service Providers Association (TISPA) project initially funded by Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). The AIXP has been setup and is maintained by volunteers.
WHAT IS IX/IXP?
An Internet Exchange Point (IX or IXP) is a physical infrastructure that allows different Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) and sometimes companies with large networks to connect to each other and exchange local traffic between their networks by means of mutual peering agreements, which allow traffic to be exchanged at much faster speeds and reduces the cost of international routing.
So far there are Six ISP’s connected to AIXP. For more understanding please check the FAQ’s below or contact us, you may also want to visit AIXP’s website.
The peers connected at AIXP are:
Habari Node PLC | CyberNet/Arusha Art | Raha Liquid Telecoms | Milan Cable Networks | Simbanet Tanzania Ltd | Gadgetronix/Blink | Vodacom PLC | Tigo Tanzania PLC| Smile Communication Tanzania Ltd | Smart Tanzania Ltd | Halotel PLC | Airtel Tanzania PLC | PCH
Mwanza IXP – MIXP
The Mwanza IXP was created in cooperation between TCRA and TISPA. It is operated by TISPA in order to provide a neutral peering point for IP networks in Mwanza, Tanzania. This does allow for local routing of Internet traffic in Mwanza, between network operators, via peering connections.
These will reduce the average per-bit delivery cost for Internet traffic and more importantly reduce latencies, increase available bandwidth and improve quality of service since traffic is routed locally.
Peering at MIXP started in June 2016, after obtaining numbering resources from AfriNIC at the end of May 2016.
Location & setup
The IXP is located at TTCL Head Office, Post St, Kamanga, in Mwanza: (https://goo.gl/maps/7yPJfsoiYqt). MIXP is making use if the equipment supplied by TCRA, 2x Cisco Gigabit switches, a Cisco 2811 router and 3 Dell servers, along with rack, UPS and accessories.
The peers connected at MIXP are:
Tanzania Telecommunication Co.Ltd (TTCL) | Halotel PLC | Airtel Tanzania PLC | Habari Node PLC | Raha Liquid Telecoms | Simbanet Tanzania Ltd| Mass Computers Tanzania Ltd | Vodacom PLC | Tigo Tanzania PLC | CTV | Smile Communication | WiA Company Ltd.
Traffic statistics are collected since November 2016 and show the following development:
This shows that traffic flows up to 3 Mbps (or short bursts even higher) are accommodated by MIXP. Information about Mwanza IXP (MIXP) is publicly available at https://www.tix.or.tz/mixp/ , which also includes the list of peers and aggregate traffic graphs.
